Raiders vs. Broncos

Sunday morning we woke up and it was very very cold! Almost to the point that you wanted to crawl back into bed... but it's the Raiders and even though they lost it was still worth freezing your butt off! After taking showers and dressing in our Raider gear, we headed to the stadium and about 6:30 - 7:00 a.m. the gates to the parking lot opened and the fun begun!

Left to Right; David, Nina, Liana Tony, Crazy Raider Fan Man, Rudy, Liz, Daisy and Lizabeth. Front Row; Alexis and Tran.

Lizzie, looking on waiting for the game to start. (notice Alexis bottom corner looking a little tired)

She's out! 4 minutes into the game and she passes out!

Alcatraz Trivia

Did you know?

The exact location of Al Capone's cell is unknown. Part of his four years on Alcatraz were spent in a hospital isolation cell.

Prisoners remained on Alcatraz until they were no longer considered disruptive or incorrigible, an average of 8 to 10 years.

During the island's federal penitentiary days, the families who lived there rarely locked their doors.

These are some of the pictures we took during the boat ride to Alcatraz dock.

When we first arrived on the dock we were guided to the bottom of the first of many hills to meet our tour guide. The first thing that you see when you first arrive at the dock is this large sign.

Ohlone and Miwok Indians occasionally visited the island that is now known as Alcatraz. Between 1776 and 1846 when the Yankees took over the island from the Mexicans, the island was noted on maps but was otherwise unused. The last Mexican governor of California planned to erect a lighthouse on Alcatraz but before it could be build, California was annexed by the United States. In 1861 Alcatraz had been built and had 111 smoothbore cannon, rows of open gun emplacements carved out of the island's slopes. Apparently, the city and it's rich port were tempting targets for Confederate raiders and Alcatraz was an important part of the U.S. Army's western defence plan. More than 400 soldiers were stationed on the island. During the Civil war Alcatraz's defences became obsolete.

While walking up the dock towards the cellhouse you pass by the Barracks / Apartments. It was also known as building 64. It was later remodeled into apartments for correctional officers and their families.

This is the water tower which is located just before entering the cellhouse.

After walking up the same path to the cellhouse as the imates did hundreds of years ago you walk into the inmate reception area which leads you into the showers. On the right side, inmates would collect their uniforms, shoes, blanket, pillow etc.

Lizzie and Alexis listening to the audio from the tour. The girls were amazed by Alcatraz but they found the audio tour a bore.

This prison cell was pitch black when the kids walked into it. As you can see Alexis refused to walk completely into the cell. Anthony was the brave one!

The following pictures are from the inside the officer's and warden's office and the visitors enterance area.
